RFID UHF LED electronic tag (UHF LED object location tag)

Overview

The UHF illuminated RFID tag – also known as a passive illuminated tag or LED object tracking and positioning tag – is a specialized RF tag that integrates a miniature LED indicator into a standard UHF passive RFID tag. It is compatible with the ISO/IEC 18000-6C (EPC C1G2) universal UHF protocol and utilizes the reader's RF energy to power the LED, eliminating the need for a built-in battery. This tag enables dual functionality: batch inventory counting and individual item visual positioning, effectively addressing the industry-wide challenge of "reading the tag but failing to locate the item" when dealing with dense shipments, archives, or cables.

LED RFID Tag with EPC 240bits Battery-Free Design for Visual Positioning in UHF Applications

1. Energy Harvesting: The UHF reader emits RF electromagnetic waves at 840–960 MHz; the tag's antenna couples this RF energy, which is then converted into microampere-level DC current by a rectifier circuit, simultaneously waking up the RFID chip.
2. Command Matching: The handheld or fixed reader sends a specified EPC/TID retrieval command; all tags within the field are read in batch; the chip only activates the LED circuit when a target tag with a matching EPC is detected.
3. Lighting Indicator: Upon successful matching, the micro-LED continuously flashes or stays lit, allowing users to visually identify the target item; the LED automatically turns off when the tag leaves the reader's coverage area, ensuring no additional energy consumption and extending the tag's lifespan. Additional distinction: The market offers two types of RFID tags – passive (mainstream) and active –: -Passive tags: No built-in battery; low cost; service life ≥ 10 years; read/write range of 3–8 m; ideal for warehousing and archival applications; -Active tags: Contain a built-in lithium battery; read/write range up to 30 m; higher cost; require periodic battery replacement; less commonly used for large-scale outdoor asset tracking.

III. Basic Hardware Structure:

  • Aluminum Etched Copper Antenna: Harvests RF energy, compatible with the 900 MHz ultra-high frequency band;
  • Specialized LED-powered RFID Chip (Mainstream Model: KX2005XBL): Integrates storage, energy management, and LED driving circuits;
  • Micro-Surface Mount LED: Typically emits green light, capable of being read in both high-and low-light outdoor environments;
  • Base Material and Adhesive: PET flexible surface material with single-sided strong adhesive; supports printing text or barcodes using a tag printer;
  • Release Paper Protective Layer: Designed for roll-based mass production, suitable for large-scale tag labeling operations.

V. Core Product Advantages:

  • Dual Functionality: Combines traditional UHF batch inventorying (identifying hundreds of labels in a single operation) with single-item positioning and illumination, eliminating the need for manual searching;
  • Battery-Free and Maintenance-Free: Passive design eliminates the need for charging or battery replacement, reducing subsequent operation and maintenance costs;
  • Intuitive and Efficient Positioning: Suitable for dense shelving, archive cabinets, cable shafts, and dimly lit warehouses – the LED lights directly mark target items, increasing picking efficiency by over 60%;
  • Low Cost and Easy Deployment: The sticker-based design allows for direct application to cartons, archive boxes, equipment, or cables; it is compatible with standard RFID printers;
  • Strong Compatibility: Compatible with mainstream UHF handheld devices and channel readers available on the market, which can issue light-searching commands;
  • Lightweight and Flexible Design: Constructed from thin PET material, it can be attached to curved surfaces, documents, or thin cables without occupying additional space.

VI. Typical Application Scenarios:

  1. Smart Warehouse and Logistics Management (Most Commonly Used): Batch inventorying during inbound processing, order picking, and locating idle materials; for stacks of cartons, users can simply select the item number on the handheld device, and the device will illuminate to locate the item – eliminating the need for manual searching.
  2. Archive/Book Management: For dense archive boxes in filing rooms or book collections in libraries, quickly retrieve specific files, overcoming the challenges associated with searching through stacked archives.
  3. Server Room Cable/Communication Cable Management: For large quantities of network cables or fiber optics in low-voltage shafts or server rooms, use the LED lights to quickly identify target cables, significantly reducing the time required for cable troubleshooting.
  4. Fixed Asset Management: Conduct inventory counts for office computers, instruments, tools, and equipment; for multiple units of the same type in a workshop, use one-click positioning to locate specific equipment.
  5. Medical consumables/physical evidence management: Use hospital high-value consumables cabinets and public security physical evidence storage rooms with light-shielding storage environments featuring clear lighting for preventing mishandling or inventory omissions.
  6. Shelf-based material and automotive spare parts management: Employ multi-tiered dense shelving systems to achieve precise positioning of small-sized materials in automotive spare parts warehouses.

VII. Selection Recommendations:

  • For archives, cartons, and non-metallic shelving: Standard elongated luminous sticker labels;
  • For metallic equipment and iron shelving: Specialized anti-metal luminous hangtag labels;
  • For fine cables in equipment rooms: Narrow, slender LED labels;
  • For outdoor or high-light environments: Custom high-brightness green LED labels;
  • For supporting equipment: Select UHF handheld devices or fixed readers that support the Select light-searching command.
